Fremont City Council Approves Funding for More Affordable Housing

At the Fremont City Council meeting held on November 20, 2018, the Council approved two actions involving affordable housing.

The Council approved entitlements and funding for the conversion of the Islander Motel to affordable housing. The project, located at 4101 Mowry Ave. in central Fremont, will offer rental apartments for low income households. The project will consist of two phases. Phase I will include redeveloping the existing two-story 70-room motel and adding a third story to convert the building into 79 apartment units. Phase II will include the addition of a new four-story building with 49 units to be built on the vacant land behind the motel.

In addition, the Council approved additional funding for the construction of City Center Apartments, a 60-unit affordable housing project located at 38631 Fremont Blvd. in central Fremont. The project would provide supportive housing for low-income households, with a number of units set aside for veterans and people with mental disabilities.
