Fremont’s first pedestrian signal will be activated the week of June 17th at the intersection of Mowry Avenue/Waterside Circle. The pedestrian signal will offer pedestrians a protected crossing for this busy arterial intersection, enhancing access to the Fremont BART station and City Center area.
Pedestrian signals are a newer type of traffic control device. A Federal Highway Administration study found that pedestrian signals can reduce vehicle/pedestrian crashes by 69%.
Pedestrian signals feature a unique type of operations, as illustrated in the graphic above. For more information on how to use pedestrian signals and other new traffic control devices (including instructional videos), please visit Fremont Vision Zero.
