Transportation

Fremont is ideally located in the Silicon Valley just north of San Jose and to the east of the San Francisco Bay. Major highways, public transit, and international airports enable people to quickly travel anywhere while providing employees with multiple choices for getting to work easily and quickly.

BART

Freeways

Two major freeways provide easy access to the greater San Francisco Bay Area from Fremont. Interstate 880 is located on the western side of Fremont and provides a direct link to San Jose to the south and Oakland to the north. Interstate 680 flanks Fremont on the east and is the major traffic corridor between San Jose and the Tri-Valley area of Livermore, Dublin, and Pleasanton.

Freeway Interchange

State Highways 84, 92, and 237 also provide access to nearby communities. Highway 84 connects Fremont with the Peninsula communities of Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Mountain View across the Dumbarton Bridge (Fremont is only 15 miles from Palo Alto).  Highway 92 connects Interstate 880 and Highway 101 and also connects Fremont with the Peninsula communities of San Mateo, Foster City, and Redwood City across the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.  Highway 237 connects Southern Fremont to the Silicon Valley cities of Milpitas and Mountain View.

As part of the City's Capital Improvement program, funding has been granted to reconstruct I-880/Dixon Landing Road Interchange from two to eight lanes and widen I-880 through the interchange.  This project provides improved access for Fremont residents and employees.

Air

Fremont is conveniently located near three international airports:

  • San Francisco International Airport – 40 miles northwest of Fremont on Highway 101.
  • Oakland International Airport – 25 miles north of Fremont on Interstate 880.
  • San Jose International Airport – 20 miles south of Fremont on Interstate 880.

Rapid Transit

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) provides dependable rapid transit access to much of the Bay Area. BART currently has its southernmost station in central Fremont and is working with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to expand the BART system into the cities of Milpitas, San Jose, and Santa Clara.
BART

The extension will begin at the new Warm Spring station (in Fremont), which will be under construction by 2004. Once built, the extension will be the connecting link between Santa Clara County and the current BART system. For more information on BART station locations and schedules, please consult BART's web site at http://www.bart.gov/.

Rail

The Centerville Train Station, in Fremont, services the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) and the Amtrak "Capitol Corridor" train lines.  The Amtrak "Capitol Corridor" train line links Fremont to both Sacramento to the north and San Jose to the south. The Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) train line travels from San Joaquin County to Santa Clara. Freight needs are served by Union Pacific rail lines. Train Tracks

Bus

Alameda County Transit (AC Transit) provides local bus service for western Alameda and Contra Costa counties, from Richmond in the north to Fremont in the south. The Eastbay Paratransit Consortium and individual cities provide paratransit service for this same area. The Dumbarton Consortium provides the DB Express service across the Dumbarton Bridge to Santa Clara and San Mateo counties on weekdays. AC Transit

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) also connects the Fremont BART station with Santa Clara County. For more information about AC Transit's lines and schedules, visit their web site at http://www.actransit.org/ or call (510) 891-4727. For more information on VTA lines and schedules, visit their web site at http://www.vta.org/ or call (408) 321-2300.
