Downtown is the social heartbeat of a community where social and economic exchanges take place, celebrations are held, friends run into each other, and cultures mix. Downtown Fremont is poised to become a vibrant and sustainable urban mixed use district that will serve as a destination for the city and region.
The City of Fremont is dedicated to sustainability, the ability of the current generation to meet its needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The City now supports a number of sustainability projects, including efforts to encourage energy efficiency projects, promote clean transportation options, adopt renewable energy sources, improve in pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, divert waste through recycling and composting, conserve water, and other related measures.
Vision Zero 2020 is a data-driven street safety policy that strives to eliminate traffic fatalities and reduce severe injuries by the year 2020. First initiated by Sweden in 1997, Vision Zero has proven successful across Europe achieving 50% reductions in fatalities over a decade. Since 2014, the Vision Zero approach has been adopted by a growing number of American cities. In September 2015, the Fremont City Council approved Vision Zero as its traffic safety policy.
Fremont has become a vital zone for 21st century American industrial production. The Fremont Innovation District is the City’s densest employment hub measuring over 2,500 acres in south Fremont and is ground-zero for advanced manufacturing in the Silicon Valley region.
