New Recycling Processing Fee to Go in Effect September 2018

Recycling

Beginning September 1, garbage bills will increase by $1.50 per month for each residential customer/unit to accommodate new quality standards required by the industries that accept recyclable materials. This requires additional sorting and processing of recyclables which has increased program costs.

Historically, Fremont’s solid waste collection rates included the cost of curbside recycling material collection because the market value of the recovered materials offset any processing costs incurred. However, recent policy changes by the largest purchaser of U.S. recycling material have resulted in a decrease in the volume of recycled material purchased and a higher quality standard for the material accepted.

With few market alternatives, these standards have complicated the economics of managing curbside recycling programs around the country. The City will monitor for any changes in market conditions that could affect this fee.

Please only recycle materials listed as acceptable in Fremont’s recycling program and keep trash and other non-recyclable items out of recycling bins. For more information, visit our website or call 510-494-4570.
