[ARCHIVED] Fremont Cares Rental Relief Program Complete

Coronavirus, text, and logo

The City of Fremont Human Services Department and Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) are pleased to announce the completion of the Fremont Cares Rental Relief program. Opened on May 18, 2020, the program provides federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) CARES funds to eligible households unable to pay their rent due to a COVID 19-related loss of income. Of the more than 300 applications received, Fremont Cares granted 95 families funds to pay up to three months of unpaid rent dating back to as early as March 17, 2020, the date of the original Shelter in Place order. Application priority was based on a number of factors, including income, family size, and special circumstances such as caring for elderly family members. With an average subsidy of $4,210, the families who received funding have expressed much gratitude for the assistance.

In addition to rental assistance, many families indicated they would benefit from support in other areas such as employment, utilities, food, financial coaching, and counseling. The Family Support Services team at the FRC will reach out to every family who applied, regardless of whether they received rental assistance, to offer help and connect them to the services they need.

Overall, the Fremont Cares Rent Relief Program provided $400,000 in rental assistance to Fremont families. Funding for this relief package comes from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, signed into law on March 27, 2020, as part of the CDBG Program.
