Coastal Cleanup Day 40th Anniversary
Thank you to our volunteers!
On September 21, 2024, Fremont hosted an inspiring Coastal Cleanup Day, with 247 volunteers making a significant impact by removing 920 pounds of trash, 300 pounds of recyclables, and 180 pounds of compost from local waterways. Notable finds included a shop vac, fishing pole, and a toy dinosaur, illustrating the diverse waste we face. This year also marked the 40th anniversary of Coastal Cleanup Day, celebrating over 26 million pounds of trash removed across California since its inception in 1979.
We encourage everyone to continue efforts in reducing waste and protecting our natural resources.

Sorting Stewards
This year, we’re seeking reliable Sorting Stewards from Sabercat, Stivers, NLC Regulars, and local environmental groups. Stewards will assist with proper disposal of trash and will undergo a hands-on training session on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 4-5 pm, plus additional time before and after the event on Sept. 21.
As a Sorting Steward, you’ll:
- Learn to use our new Sorting System (at Site C)
- Assist with data recording via the Clean Swell app
- Handle paper data cards
Site C:
- 28 Sorting Stewards needed
- Ages 13 & up
- If you’ve attended at least 3 habitat restoration/creek cleanup/NLC gardening events or are otherwise a strong candidate, email environment@fremont.gov. Register for Site C and indicate "Sorting Steward."
Sites A, B, D, G, H, & T:
- At least 1 Sorting Steward needed per site
- Ages 13 & up
- Register for your site and note "Sorting Steward" in the organization question. Email environment@fremont.gov to confirm your interest, and I’ll send a link for the additional training.

Self-Guided Cleanup, Any Day
Clean up your neighborhood, parks, and local area anytime during the month of September. Trash from inland areas flows downstream to the coast, so cleaning up neighborhood trash prevents marine debris. Gather cleanup supplies from home, download the CleanSwell app (to count your trash, and to have your trash counted!), and clean on your own time. All cleanups that take place during September will count towards our statewide goals.
Report Your Cleanup
Report your cleanup by recording data on the CleanSwell app anytime in September and have it counted towards statewide goals. Learn why data collection is important.
Do It Yourself Supply Ideas
- Grocery bags or buckets for trash
- Kitchen tongs as pickers
- Milk Jugs to collect small pieces of trash
Schoolyard Cleanups
Want your students to participate in Coastal Cleanup Day without a field trip? Organize a Schoolyard Cleanup to help them become environmental stewards in their own school and neighborhood!
