Overview
The Centerville Railroad Corridor Quiet Zone Project proposes to install safety improvements at six at-grade railroad crossings and to eliminate the current federal requirement for railroad horn blasts. The project is being implemented in coordination with Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and the Altamont Commute Express (ACE). The street crossings included in the project include: Blacow Road, Dusterberry Way, Maple Avenue, Fremont Boulevard, Shinn Street, and Clarke Drive.
Objectives
The Centerville Railroad Safety Improvement Project seeks to achieve the following goals:
- Implement supplemental safety measures (SSMs) at each at-grade crossing to improve the safety for all modes of travel across the railroad tracks.
- Seek funding from regional transportation sources (County, State and Federal) to implement railroad crossing safety improvements. The project has been identified as a priority for implementation by 2030 as part of the County Transportation Plan (CTP) for Alameda County.
- Establish a quiet zone in the Centerville neighborhood and along the ACE Train corridor within Fremont.
Status
The City of Fremont is funding planning efforts to facilitate the project. On December 14, 2021, the Fremont City Council approved a “notice of intent” to create a railroad quiet zone along the Centerville corridor. The City has hired RailPros to assist with preliminary concept development and agency coordination for safety enhancements.
