Home MenuSafe Routes to School
Fremont's Safe Routes to School program strives to make it easier and safer for students to walk and bike to school. A large body of research shows that students who walk and bike to school are happier, healthier, and have higher academic achievement. In addition, driving to school is a significant source of traffic congestion that impacts neighborhoods. Fremont’s comprehensive program combines engineering tools with safety education and encouragement activities. The City collaborates with a variety of partners including the Fremont Unified School District, Alameda County Transportation Commission, and community organizations.
Education and Encouragement Resources
The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) Program is managed by the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC). The program has education, safety training, and encouragement resources available for parents, teachers and administrators. These resources are free, easy to request, and available for all age levels and in different formats including in-person and online options. Alameda CTC also coordinates annual events such as International Walk and Roll to School Day and the Golden Sneaker Competition to encourage students to walk and bike to school. More than half of Fremont schools participate in the Countywide Safe Routes to Schools Program.
In addition, the City of Fremont partners with Safe Moves - a California non-profit organization - to provide a traffic education program that teaches students and young adults how to safely and legally ride a bicycle and teaches younger students how to safely cross the street in variety of different scenarios. The program provides workshops, school / community rodeos, and bicycle helmet giveaways. Contact Us to request classes or events through the Safe Moves Program.

School Safety Improvements and Recommended School Routes
The City of Fremont conducted School Safety Assessments for all 40 public schools in the City between 2017 and 2019. The School Safety Assessments are a collaboration of Fremont Unified School District (FUSD), students, parents, City of Fremont Transportation staff and consultants. The assessments include a comprehensive audit of walking and bicycling safety conditions and resulted in a set of infrastructure recommendation maps of recommended walking and bicycling routes.
Between 2018 and 2020, the City worked to implement “quick build” projects at all 40 schools citywide, based on the school safety assessments. These improvements included new stop signs, upgraded crosswalks, enhanced safety signage, and “paint and plastic” projects to calm traffic and shorten crossings.
The City is currently developing its Active Transportation Plan, which includes updating Recommended Walking and Biking Routes, and project recommendations to improve access for walking and biking to places like schools. To provide your input online, stay up to date on new online or in-person engagement opportunities, and be informed about any future updates on the Plan development, please visit the City's MyFremont project page and sign up for updates.
