What It Takes to Become a Fremont Firefighter

Responsibilities

Fire recruits in a classroomIt takes hard work, determination, and courage to become a Fremont Firefighter / Paramedic. Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to fire, hazardous material, and rescue emergencies
  • Providing emergency medical assistance to victims of accidents, injuries, or illness
  • Participating in fire suppression, prevention, and administration activities
  • Maintaining, testing, and operating tools and equipment
  • Drilling and training, using the latest firefighting and lifesaving techniques
  • Participating in public relations activities

Minimum Qualifications for Entry-level Recruits

  • Fire truck driving trainingCurrent Certified California Emergency Medical Technician or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (for Firefighter/EMT Positions)
  • Current California Paramedic License with current certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support or Basic Trauma Life Support or equivalent (for Firefighter/Paramedic positions)
  • Currently placed on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List
  • A Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card issued within 6 months of the final application filing date
  • A valid Class C California Driver's License
  • Vision of not less than 20/100 in each eye correctable to not less than 20/30 in each eye corrected and without color blindness
  • Ability to pass a job-related psychological evaluation and medical examination, which will include a drug screen
  • Ability to pass an extensive public safety background check
  • Graduation from High School or certificate of equivalency
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Bilingual skills and college-level coursework in Fire Technology or related field are desirable

Probationary Period

The probationary period for this position is 24 months.
